Thomson vuonna 1881.

Smooth collie is a dog breed which belongs to FCI group 1 (Cattle and herding dogs). The breed comes from Scotland where its roots are very old as herding dogs. Shepherds in the British islands needed a dog which could work long days by its durable physique. Dogs hair needed to be thick, protective and waterproof. Their nature supposed to be gentle, not aggressive or fearful. By appearance an original Collie looked more like Bordercollies nowadays and people were interested in them only as working dogs. Breeding by appearance of British herding dogs started after the Queen Elisabeth got an eye on them. First definition for the breed was written by Mr. Shirley and W.W. Thomson in 1881. First short-coated collie (Glennfield's Gordiet Girl) came to Finland in 1976 and can be find also behind both of my bitches family tree.

Using Collies for their original purpose has gone very rare by the development of society but most of them still have tendency to herd. Today's Collies' purpose is more like to be a versatile dog for both show and sports and an important family member. The several dog sports like research, tracking, obedience and agility for example have replaced previous assignments. Collies have rights to compete in working dog trials in Finland and Smooth Collies are a common sight in obedience and rally-obedience fields as so has their speed and agility fascinated people on agility competitions.

Health situation in the breed is good enough but as several dog breeds they also have some heritable faults and diseases. Mostly these can be inherited recessively and those features can be latent. Even though everyone would use only health-checked individuals there can be born one affected individual if both of the parents has same latent features. There are gene tests developed for the most common heritable diseases like CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly), DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) and MDR-1. The breed belongs to PEVISA which is Finnish Kennel Club's program for defending heritable faults and diseases. This means that before you can register the litter, you need to have at least official statements of elbow and hip dysplasia and eyes of both of the parents. It also suggests that you should only mate a dog with C/C hips to A/A and the elbow limit is 1/1.
